Overall Opinion: It's hard to argue that the way we enjoy videos and music has changed radically in the last few years. While media conglomerates and cable and TV providers once held the strings to practically every form of popular entertainment, the rise of websites like Vimeo and YouTube have fundamentally altered what we have access to and how we view it. Practically anyone can become a creator and have nearly immediate access to their budding fan base, but these new distribution methods also come with their own flaws. Much of the content you'll find online won't ever be distributed in a physical form. That means that if it disappears from the internet, you have no traditional way to access it. Dirpy provides a solution by allowing you to transcode any videos you find through an online website and convert them to files that you can access locally even if the video disappears or you lose access to your internet connection. Dirpy's objectives are simple, and the interface is stripped down to match. Upon your first visit, it may seem minimalist to a fault, but it gets the job done. Navigating to dirpy.com will provide you with a single basic search bar. All you have to do is paste the video URL you want to convert here and hit enter. From here, you'll be presented with a number of options about how you want to handle the conversion. From here, you have a pretty significant amount of control, and everything is handled from a clean and stripped down interface. Audio recording is all converted to MP3, but you have control over the bit rate through a simple pull down menu, and you can even designate timestamps to determine how much of the audio you want to record. This makes it a great tool for editing. You can also change the title, designate information like artist, genre, track, album, and year, and even leave your own comments that will be converted into meta data on your new local file. Video options are a bit more limited. You can't split the file up into segments, but you have more range in the quality and format of the files you want to convert the video into. A simple click of a button allows you to download the converted file directly to your hard drive or test out the conversion through your browser. These files can then be shared directly through social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. The whole format is clean, simple, and devoted to the specific task at hand, but there are some limitations. Dirpy only allows the conversion of files 20 minutes in length or shorter. Since you can't set timestamps when converting video, that can put some stiff limitations on what videos you can save to your machine.
Pros: Completely free to use Conversion of videos is as simple as can be Requires no subscription or software downloads to use
Cons: Judicious use required, as conversion may violate copyright restrictions Restrictions on the length of videos that can be converted and saved Can be inconsistent with some video files
