Overall Opinion: If you're looking for an icon that's truly iconic, IcoMoon is the perfect app for you. Its execution is as simple as its premise, but it manages to create a unique niche for itself in a marketplace that's overflowing with clones and redundancies. IcoMoon serves as both a repository and editing suite for icons. While that may sound semantical, the value for web developers is actually quite meaningful. It all comes down to how images are displayed in HTML and CSS. Typical image files like JPEGs and GIFs are bulky, taking up significant space and loading slowly, at least in comparison to the sorts of icons created in IcoMoon. Since they're registered as Unicode objects, icons are incredibly lightweight and able to be easily implemented through HTML and styled with basic CSS functions. Moreover, they can be quickly adjusted with the basic text elements available in the standard HTML library. The other advantage comes from the fact that icons are packaged together into a single font library. If there are a number of standard and simple icons you want to incorporate into your app or website, you can easily load them up into a single font family, upload it with one line of code, and have access to all of them with minimal hassle. The IcoMoon ecosystem is composed of three main features. The IcoMoon app allows you to create your own font library by simply selecting them from the list of available options and binding them to keys or unicode symbols. IcoMoon will automatically compile the chosen icons into a font family for you that you can download directly to your computer as a .tff file. Icons can also be saved locally as SVG files. While a small number of free icons are available to all users, the vast amount of icons available are locked behind the IcoMoon subscription plan. What's especially cool is the compatibility if IcoMoon. Countless users have created their own icon libraries that you can download for a flat cost. While IcoMoon doesn't come equipped with a full icon editing feature, it does present some options to help you personalize the icons in your library. These include the ability to flip or rotate any icon, change the base height and size, and alignment, and enable ligatures that link icons together. For the most part, the majority of users probably won't need to make use of the features. IcoMoons' font library relies on a standard 16 by 16 pixel square to ensure consistency throughout the results, and this allows them to produce universally crisp icons. That's a good thing, given the reputation that font icons have for being blurry and low quality in execution. IcoMoon's subscription plans provide multiple premium features like permanent usage links, online browser storage, and JSON integration. They can even host your font families for you.
Pros: Icons offer a supremely lightweight alternative to traditional image files The interface for library creation can be picked up in seconds Many of the baseline features are free
Cons: Free users are locked out of most of the available icons Payment subscriptions can be relatively expensive given the niche nature of the product
